Bruises usually occur as the result of a traumatic incident such as a fall or accident, or they can be caused by a blow. The
severity of these injuries can vary enormously: some cause little distress or pain, while the victim of a serious accident
may require hospital treatment in order to deal with internal bruising, or damage to the head, spine or vital organs.
A bruise occurs when blood seeps into the tissues beneath the skin. The characteristic appearance of a bruise is initially
purple, changing to a greenish shade as the bruise gradually disappears. The surface of the skin is tender to touch in the
early stage of bruising, becoming less painful as the bruise fades away.
Home Remedies for Bruising:
- Apply cold compresses or ice packs to the bruised area at ten-minute intervals. This will alleviate swelling and
pain. Do not use ice-cold compresses if the surface of the skin has been broken.
- If limb has been badly bruised, move it as much as possible. In the case of a bruised leg, resting while keeping the limb
raised on pillow above heart level.
- Applying poultices to the injured area can be an effective and soothing way of healing bruised tissue. A simple one may
be made from marigold petals sandwiched between two layers of gauze, and applied, warmed, to the bruised skin. This is
especially soothing if bruises has occured where there is little skin covering the area, e.g. bruised shins or black
eyes.
- Another easy (but rather sticky) poultice may be made from a teaspoonful of dried marjoram, a little vineger and enough
honey to turn the mixture into a thick paste. Alternatively, rolled oats will make a soothing poultice when boiled with water
into a thick paste and applied (cooled) onto a cloth, before bandaging in place over the bruise.
- Witch hezel is a soothing and cooling liquid when applied to inflamed or bruised skin. However, take care that its action
is not too astringent for sensitive skins.
- Onion juice (rub a onion cut in half on a bruise), lavender or thyme vinegar may speed up the healing of bruises when
applied to tender skin.
Herbal Remedies to treat bruises:
- Arnica may be applied to the bruised area in the form of lotion, massage balm or ointment. Arnica is extremely
effective at soothing painful, sensitive, bruised skin. The lotion may be applied to the bruised area on a compress, or a
tablespoonful can be added to a warm bath if there is generalized aching or soreness. However, never apply Arnica to any area
where the skin is broken; instead choose Calendula or Hypericum skin prepartions, which are more suited to application on
grazed or cut skin.
- Comfrey ointment may be applied to bruised, painful skin to ease discomfort.
- Mullein oil may be applied gently to bruised tissue in order to soothe the sensitive area.
